What is after-hours trading?

After-hours (after-market) trading runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, after the regular US stock market session closes. Most large after-hours moves happen because companies release earnings results, guidance changes, or other material news shortly after the close. Liquidity is thinner than during regular hours, so prices can move sharply and may not carry into the next session.

This page tracks the biggest after-hours gainers and losers in real time. For moves before the opening bell, see premarket movers. How we rank movers is described in our methodology.
